šŸš‘ Government snubs SHIF briefing days before roll-out

ā€œThe Ministry of Health cordially invites youā€¦ā€ to wait for FOUR HOURS before they abruptly cancel their own media briefing this morning at the JW Marriott to update citizens on the roll-out of SHIF. The media briefing was meant to help disseminate information about the upcoming Social Health Insurance Fund (which will begin being deducted from your salaries) so that the public is informed and aware. The last-minute cancellation comes in the backdrop of low recruitment of members to the new fund besides Members of Parliament also questioning KSh 104 billion Healthcare IT system to Safaricom and its partners in the project (Apeiro and Konvergenz). What do they not want you to know? 

šŸ“± Safaricom comes crawling back for Starlink partnership

This is a complicated one! In early September, reports emerged that before entering the Kenyan market, Starlink approached Safaricom for a partnership before entering the country. Unfortunately, due to reported ā€˜issuesā€™ in the negotiation, the original partnership discussions ceased. Now, new reports have emerged that Safaricom and Starlink have re-opened conversations around partnership. This comes weeks after a letter from Safaricom leadership to regulators was leaked requesting that regulators force satellite internet providers to partner with local ISPs. This is where the story gets juicy. 

ā›Ŗ Regulate the churches, mosques, and everything in between

A new bill which has just been proposed in Parliament proposing the creation of an office to oversee and register religious organizations. Termed the, ā€˜Religious Organizations Billā€™ proposes either a 5 million shilling fine or 3-year suspension for unregistered religious entities (including churches and mosques). If the bill passes, religious entities will require at least 25 individuals to profess a particular faith in addition to a host of other bureaucracy. There is significant backlash over the bill citing that ā€˜The Stateā€™ is overreaching and may use the bill to not only monitor but control religious entities.
