Here comes Kenya’s Sixth City…

Thika municipality

By Brian Nzomo

Thika is on the verge of becoming Kenya's sixth city, but the Senate committee that endorsed its bid also uncovered unanswered questions about the municipality's finances and readiness. The industrial town comfortably met the legal threshold on population and revenue generation, yet billions of shillings in verified revenue sit alongside only a fraction of that amount in audited expenditure, a discrepancy lawmakers want reconciled. Even as the committee recommended city status, it directed Kiambu County to address gaps ranging from public cultural facilities to water supply, waste management and drainage. By Dr. Jannie Zaaiman

Africa's digital economy is expanding at remarkable speed, but its cyber defences are struggling to keep up with the pace of that transformation. As governments push digital services, fintech, AI and cross-border trade, cybercrime is evolving just as quickly, exposing weaknesses in institutions, skills and critical infrastructure. The challenge is no longer stopping every attack but building systems resilient enough to detect breaches early, limit damage and recover quickly. Some countries are demonstrating that sustained investment in cyber capacity can pay off, while others are still building the foundations. The future of Africa's digital economy may depend less on how quickly it digitises than on how effectively it secures the systems that make that growth possible.
